Daily News Briefing: March, 8, 2023
You’re listening to The Gazette’s Daily News Podcast. I’m Bailey Cichon filling in for the regular host, Stephen Schmidt.
First, drip coffee lovers and home brewing fans, listen up. A new cafe is opening in Mount Vernon this summer. In addition to serving coffee, teas and espresso drinks, Little Scratch Coffee Roasters will sell beans for home brewers and host coffee education workshops. Owners Katrina and Joel Anderson have been in the roasting and coffee distribution business for seven years. Their new venture at 113 First St. E in Mount Vernon plans to open to the public by May 6. Coffee bean pickups are currently available by appointment.
The Iowa Senate unanimously passed a bill Monday that will give Iowans more control of their online personal data. The bill is Senate File 262. Briefly, the bill would require companies that control Iowans’ personal data to notify users of data collection, provide the collection upon request, share what the data is used for and whether it is shared with third parties. Additionally, Iowans would be able to delete the collected data. If passed, the requirements would take effect in 2025. For a closer look at Senate File 262, read Caleb McCullough’s article at thegazette.com.
Next, the Iowa Farm Bureau Federation is pledging $1 million to Iowa FFA for agriculture education. This will help FFA address Iowa’s dwindling population of agriculture educators. Since 2015, Iowa has lost 204 ag educators to retirement or other career opportunities. Iowa FFA will use this money to attract and retain talent. For details on that initiative, read Grace King’s article at thegazette.com.
Finally, a look at today’s weather. Expect a high near 46 and a low around 34 tonight. Today will be cloudy and windy. Tonight there’s a 20% chance of precipitation. Whether that is snow or rain is still in the air.
