This is John McGlothlen with The Gazette digital news desk and I'm here with your update for Monday, Aug. 9th.
According to the National Weather Service, we’ll have a 20% chance of showers and thunderstorms before 8 a.m. It will be mostly cloudy, then gradually becoming sunny, with a high near 89. Winds from the south, 5 to 10 mph, then from the west in the afternoon. A heat advisory will be in effect from noon to 8 p.m. for the southern part of the state, for all counties south of Johnson County. Tonight in the Cedar Rapids area, we’re again expecting a 20% chance of showers and thunderstorms after 1 a.m. and a low around 72.
Looking at the latest CDC COVID Data Tracker, for the 7-day period ending August 7, there are 89 Iowa counties showing either a high level of community transmission or substantial community transmission. Linn County remains in the former category and Johnson County in the latter.
