Gazette Daily News Briefing, February 13
This is John McGlothlen with The Gazette digital news desk and I'm here with your update for Monday, February 13th.
According to the National Weather Service, it will be sunny in the Cedar Rapids area today, with a high near 50. Northwest wind around 5 mph coming from the south in the afternoon. Then tonight, increasing clouds, with a low around 31.
Police said two people were killed and a third injured Saturday evening in a crash in southwest Cedar Rapids. The crash happened between a sedan and a pickup truck about 5 p.m. at the intersection of Wiley Boulevard SW and Williams Boulevard SW. Police have not yet released the names of the drivers involved. Two people in the car, an 81-year-old woman and a 75-year-old man, were transported to a hospital, where they were pronounced dead. The driver of the pickup, a man whose age was not provided, was taken to a hospital with what police described as non-life threatening injuries.
In Iowa men’s basketball, Kris Murray had 28 points, 14 rebounds, three steals and two blocks to help Iowa beat Minnesota 68-56 Sunday and hand the Golden Gophers their eighth consecutive loss. Filip Rebraca added 16 points and eight rebounds for Iowa. The Hawkeyes never trailed against Minnesota.
In Iowa women’s basketball, Molly Davis scored a season-high 17 points, Caitlin Clark added 15 points and 10 assists, and Iowa handily defeated Rutgers 111-57 on Sunday. Clark, who came into the game second in the nation in scoring and assists, picked up her 13th double-double of the season in just 21 minutes. Monika Czinano had 14 points for the Hawkeyes.
