This is Stephen Schmidt from the Gazette digital news desk and I’m here with your update for Saturday, January 21, and Sunday, January 22.
We could get some light snow Saturday evening but other than that it should be a pretty calm weekend weather wise. According to the National Weather Service, there will be a 20 percent chance of snow after 5 p.m. in the Cedar Rapids area on Saturday and a 40 percent chance of snow later on. Otherwise it will be mostly cloudy, with a high near 31 degrees. On Sunday it looks to be mostly cloudy, with a high near 31 degrees.
Seven adults and a teen were arrested Thursday and Friday on charges related to an October shooting that happened in Tiffin, according to the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office.
The 17-year-old, who was not identified by the sheriff’s office, faces an attempted murder charge.
The group of eight met up about 8:30 p.m. Oct. 24 with the intention of assaulting a juvenile “and several others associated with the juvenile” at a residence in Coralville, according to criminal complaints.
They found the people they were planning to assault and chased them in a vehicle to Highway 6 and Park Road in Tiffin, where one person in the group shot at least six times and hit the victim’s vehicle multiple times. No one in the victim’s vehicle was injured, according to a news release and the complaints.
In addition to the attempted murder charge, the 17-year-old and all seven adults are charged with participating in a riot, a felony.
One of the adults, Glenda Reighard, 22, of Tiffin, also is charged with giving false information in acquiring a weapon, a felony, and transfer of a pistol or revolver to a person under 21, a misdemeanor. Reighard is accused of buying a gun Oct. 2 for one of her co-defendants, the complaint states.
The others charged with participating in a riot are Jamyrion White, 20, of Coralville; Michael Rensing III, 19, of North Liberty; Aydin Kutcher, 18, of Coralville; David Love Jr., 19, of Coralville; Isaiah Scott, 19, of Coralville; and Dquavius Kelly, 21, of Coralville.
A three-member subcommittee of Iowa House lawmakers this week advanced a bill that would allow Iowa restaurant workers under the age of 18 to serve alcohol.
House File 14, filed by Rep. John Wills, R-Spirit Lake, eliminates the age for serving or selling alcohol in taverns and restaurants. The bill removes the age restriction for all retail establishments licensed to sell alcohol for on-premises consumption.
Wills, however, said it’s not his intent to lower the age for serving or selling alcohol in bars and taverns from 18.
“It’s kind of a silly law that we have that minors cannot carry drinks from the bar to the table,” Wills said. “But, if that they don’t drink that drink, the minor can pick up that full drink and bring it back to the kitchen to dispose of it. … It’s a workforce issue, because (restaurants that serve alcohol) can’t hire minors because they can only do part of the job.”
The Iowa Restaurant Association and Iowa Hotel & Lodging Association support the bill.
