This is Stephen Schmidt from the Gazette digital news desk and I’m here with your update for Saturday, October 2 and Sunday, October 3.
There will be a small chance for rain all weekend, but, mostly, it will feel like fall. According to the National Weather Service there will be a 20 percent chance of showers after 3 p.m. Saturday. Besides that it will be cloudy, with a high near 80 degrees. On Sunday there will be a chance of showers and thunderstorms, with a chance of precipitation listed at 40 percent. It will be mostly cloudy on Sunday with a high near 76 degrees.
“Multiple” people were shot and injured Friday night at the Ramada by Wyndham hotel in southwest Cedar Rapids, authorities said.
Cedar Rapids police provided few details, but said those injured were taken to the hospital with what appeared to be non-life-threatening injuries.
Police received a report about 10:30 p.m. about gunshots at the hotel, 525 33rd Ave. SW. In a short news release, police did not say if the shooting took place inside or outside the hotel, how many people were hurt or whether a suspect had been detained.
The department said the investigation is ongoing.
Cedar Rapids Mayor Brad Hart challenged his three rivals to share who’s bankrolling their campaigns weeks before a legal deadline requires it, and he got one candidate to take him up on it. Women Lead Change Chief Executive Officer Tiffany O’Donnell reported Friday having raised nearly twice as much as Hart, the incumbent, so far.
Hart’s release of his information, promised in a virtual forum hosted by The Gazette, was his effort to show “broad local support” and appeal across political parties. His campaign urged the other mayoral hopefuls to “join them in being fully transparent with the voters by releasing donor information” from the beginning of the year through the end of September by Oct. 8. The state’s deadline for candidates to file the information is Oct. 28, five days before the Nov. 2 election.
So far, O’Donnell reported having raised $113,285 from 262 contributions, while Hart has raised $62,780 from 192 donors. The majority of donors for both candidates hail from Cedar Rapids.
Former Vice President Mike Pence will be in Iowa City on Nov. 1 to speak at the Young America’s Foundation’s campus lecture series.
Pence, the foundation’s Ronald Reagan Presidential Scholar, will speak 7 p.m. in the Iowa Memorial Union Main Lounge. Ticketing information will be released in the coming days.
In addition to visiting the UI, Pence will speak at Texas A&M and a number of other college campuses.
His lecture will be sponsored by the UI Young America’s Foundation chapter. The foundation, founded in 1960, has several high school and college chapters that advocate conservative ideas through activism and speaker events.
Iowa City Pride has waited months to host its 50th anniversary in person — and that time is finally here.
The longest-running LGBTQ Pride celebration had to postpone its milestone anniversary last year and shift its events online due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Saturday’s celebrations kick off at noon with a Unity March instead of the event’s usual parade. People can begin gathering as early as 10 a.m., and there will be poster boards and markers for anyone wanting to make signs.
The march will begin at College Green Park at the corner of College and Johnson streets and wrap up at the corner of Linn and Washington.
