The National Weather Service on Sunday predicted 3 to 5 inches of snow during the overnight hours for the Cedar Rapids area. It will be cloudy through mid-morning Monday, then gradually clearing, with a steady temperature around 28. Winds are expected from the northwest, 10 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch is possible. Then tonight, it should be clear with a low around 15.
Seven people were killed when several tornadoes swept through Iowa Saturday night. It was the state's deadliest storm in more than a decade. Emergency management officials in Madison County said four were injured and six people were killed when one tornado touched down in the area southwest of Des Moines near the town of Winterset around 4:30 p.m. Among those killed were two children under the age of 5 and four adults. In Lucas County, about 54 miles southeast of Des Moines, officials confirmed one death and multiple reported injuries when a separate system struck less than an hour later. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources said the person who died there was in a recreational vehicle at a campground at Red Haw State Park in Chariton. One of those injured was also at the park.
In women’s basketball, the No. 2-seeded Iowa Hawkeyes are Big Ten tournament champions after their 74-67 win over the No. 5-seeded Indiana Hoosiers Sunday. It marks the first time Iowa women’s basketball has won the Big Ten regular-season and tournament titles in the same year. The duo of guard Caitlin Clark and center Monika Czinano fueled Iowa’s offense Sunday, combining to score 48 points. Czinano had a team-high 30 points on 13-for-18 shooting and 10 rebounds. Clark had 18 points on 6-for-17 shooting and seven rebounds.
